Guitar Lessons at
Kosmic Guitars......
Beginners start here! Of course you can do it!
So, you have bought your great Fender Strat Pack
and you are ready to rock!
A basic exercise to start
with...
Remember, starting to play guitar is as much about your
finger dexterity as it is theory. All the theory and tab in the world is useless
if you can't hold the strings down! Be patient, it will get easier.
Our first task is to get some strength and coordination going! This is my fave beginners exercise... no
brains required! Use one finger for each note, so you exercise all four fingers!
(4 is the pinky!)
-
Play the open E
string (0)
-
Play the F note at
the first fret (1)
-
Play the F# note
at the second fret (2)
-
Play the G at the
third fret (3)
-
Play the G# at the
fourth fret (4)

Make sure fingers are positioned just before fret for a clean, even tone.
Try the exercise on each string, until you can run up and down all the strings.

TIP:
Of
course, your fingers will get sore!
Soak your fingers in salt water to
help heal them.
They will eventually harden, so keep at it.
The next step to conquer
is playing a chord:
Find
a teacher!
Don't stress trying to be Jimi
Hendrix in a day, be patient, enjoy the guitar, and practice in manageable
blocks. If you are fatigued your attention will be down, and boredom may
set in. Put the guitar down, listen to a fave album or song, and then try
again.
When you have mastered a few
chords, tap your foot to create a rhythm, and play each chord evenly, not
too fast! The slower you practice the more likely you are to retain what
you are doing. Keep it straight and simple!
I would strongly recommend
buying a CD like a Beatles best of, getting the complete Beatles song
book, and learning to play along with all the songs.
It is great fun, and the songs are fab, baby! (Yeh).
Other great learner artists to use are:
-
Creedence Clearwater
Revival. So many easy songs!
-
The Rolling Stones.
Satisfaction is guaranteed...
-
Chuck Berry. The 12 bar
blues maestro!
-
The Shadows (Hank Marvin).
-
Jimi Hendrix. Learn Hey
Joe! C-G-D-A-E....easy!
-
Led Zeppelin. Learn
Stairway! Tough but worthy!
-
Nirvana. (Great songwriter
was Cobain!)
-
Neil Diamond. (!) Many
ways to play E, D and A!
